PASTOR'S CORNER

Absolute Dominion

During the summer months, as we enjoy our vacation, we have the opportunity to reflect and closely examine the course that our life is taking.  People tend to make significant changes to their lifestyle after a restful vacation.  Before making any decisions this month, let us pause to reflect on the guidance, which the Spoken Word of God gave us last month.

This month, let us explore the concept of Absolute Dominion.

According to the Oxford Reference Dictionary, Dominion is derived from an old French and Medieval Latin word, dominio, which originates from dominium, which comes from dominus, the Latin word for Lord.  Dominion means sovereignty, control, rule, power over a territory, colony or province or the territory of a sovereign.   Sovereign means supreme ruler.  The word sovereign also comprises the word reign, which means to be  in power.

The two scriptures above underpin the truth about our purpose and our nature thanks to the gift of Calvary.  God originally granted Adam the power to ‘rule’ over the entire earth.  He forfeited this through his sin, however Christ restored our dominion on the cross.  When the Most High granted us dominion, He made us a chosen generation and a royal priesthood – kings among all creation.  When we come to realise who we are through Christ Jesus, by reading and believing the Word, we gain a better understanding of our place in creation.

Psalm 82:6  says, ‘I have said, Ye are gods: and all of you are children of the most high…’
Psalm 8:4-6 says, ‘…what is man that thou art mindful of him…for thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.  Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands…’

1. Our Boundaries

God granted us unreserved dominion over the earth and this includes everything that dwells therein except man.  Everything has to bow down to the name of Jesus and as children of the Most High, we operate in His name, so all of creation must bow to us.  As Christians we have the privilege to call on the name of Jesus, therefore once we do so, sickness, death, poverty, debt, etc. must all kneel before us.  When we make mistakes, we are not completely defeated unless we refuse to overcome the adverse circumstances.  When man fell from grace in the Garden of Eden, God did not admit defeat.  Instead He sacrificed Jesus to reconcile us back to Him.

We are sovereign and by the authority vested in us through Christ’s death on the cross, this is our territory.  Everything that roams the earth and the air operates within our domain, therefore we cannot be controlled by that which we rule.  We must assert our authority by refusing to glorify the adverse circumstances and obstacles, which we encounter on life’s journey.   We must realise that we control our destiny – we have total control of the ‘steering wheel’ – and we are required to control our spiritual life, finances, career, relationships and property.  Do not become an inebriated driver – do not succumb to the influence of depression, anxiety as this would cause you to lose control of your vehicle; your life.

We cannot fear anything because the Bible tells us that God has put all things under our feet.  The bible stresses further that God has not given us a spirit of fear, so we cannot be in awe of that which we rule over.  There is a difference between being in awe of God and the work of His hands and actually being afraid of the things that He has placed at our disposal.

2. Enlightenment

Psalm 8:5 – 8 says, ‘…For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.  Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands: thou hast put all things under his feet…’  When the Most High granted us dominion, He declared us a royal priesthood and a king among all creation.  We are therefore not controlled by that which we rule over and Timothy 1:7 reminds us that we cannot be afraid or in awe of the things over which we have dominion.  In order to operate with the authority given to us, we need to be self-aware.  When we understand our worth through Christ Jesus, by reading the Word and believing in it, we begin to comprehend our place in creation.  Dominion requires that we realise that through Christ we can obtain the full promises of God.
